The toy train, Shivalik Deluxe, to Shimla is one of the rare trains that provide
fabulous journey. It's been on the tracks for more than a century. It has amused
passengers the most and has earned their accolades during all these years of its
operation.
British viceroy Lord Curzon inaugurated Shivalik Deluxe in November
1903. It commences the journey from Kalka to end at Shimla, covering a distance
of almost 100 kilometers. On the way, the train passes through 107 tunnels and
many lofty arched bridges. Exploring the scenic beauty of this stretch on a train
adds color and fun to the journey. The heavily subsidized travel on this route
has brought more and more visitors in the ambit of enjoyment to escape the sweaty
summers.
Highlights of the train
The
toy size of the train can be gauged from the fact that it manages to accommodate
only 120 passengers. With the walking speed it reaches its destination in 4.45
hrs. The interiors of coaches are done up with wall-to-wall carpeting, wide glass
windows and reversible cushioned chairs. Improved lighting and a music system
