What Venice is to the west, Udaipur,
the city of lakes, is the most romantically exotic spectacles of the east. The
city of dawn, Jewel of Mewar are the various names used for the city of Udaipur
and many more such names can be devised to describe the breathtaking beauty of
Udaipur. The various gifts of nature viz., mountains, lakes, and gardens are placed
in such a way that it gives the appearance of a fairy setting. It seems that painter
of destiny was more generous when he painted Udaipur.
Hemmed in by the
lush hills of Aravalli, Udaipur is a lovely land around crystal white lakes. The
various water bodies in Udaipur mirror the reflection of palaces, forts, and trees;
thereby adding to the magical effect Udaipur carries. An interesting story unfolds
the origin of city. It is said that Maharana Uday Singh founded the city in 1559
acting upon the advice of a hermit whom he had met on a hill overlooking Lake
Pichola.
