Once a major trade centre of the
sixteenth century, the imperial city of Jodhpur still holds some indubitable distinctions.
The ostentatious city of Jodhpur is second only to Jaipur in size in the desert
land of Rajasthan. It is adorn with numerous forts, graceful palaces and temples
strewn throughout the city that bring alive, the historic grandeur. Moreover,
the lifestyle in Jodhpur makes one awestruck. One can spot, men and women folk
in multihued costumes engrossed in the play of life.
An astute sage advised
Rao Jodha to build himself a stronghold. Thus the foundation of impregnable Mehrangarh
Fort atop a steep hill was laid in 1459, at the base of which grew the city that
derives its name from him - Jodhpur. The robust exterior of Mehrangarh is in direct
contrast to the delicacy of its residential apartments within. Surrounded by a
variety of shrubs all over, the city of Jodhpur seems like an oasis in the vast
desert. The pride of the city is the Mehrangarh Fort; sitting on the top of a
rocky hill, at 125 metres high.
